Devon Allen brought a background to Philadelphia that few NFL wide receivers could match. Before returning to football, he became one of the world's elite 110-meter hurdlers, representing the United States at the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. He had also played wide receiver at Oregon, giving him a football foundation before he committed himself to track and field.
The Eagles signed Allen to a three-year contract in April 2022, giving him another chance to pursue an NFL career after years focused on athletics. Philadelphia later moved him to the practice squad, and he remained around the organization as he worked to rebuild his football experience. His speed was the obvious attraction, but the bigger challenge was translating elite track movement back into the demands of professional football.
Allen eventually made his Eagles regular-season debut in 2023, contributing primarily on special teams and returning one kickoff for 17 yards. A Devon Allen T-Shirt (https://www.phillybirdthreads.com/collections/devon-allen-t-shirt) highlights a particularly unusual chapter of Philadelphia football history—one involving an Olympic hurdler, an Oregon football background and an attempt to make the jump back into the NFL.
